HR committee in Iraqi parliament visited Women prison belonging to the 'justice' ministry. They found 4000 Iraqi women and 22 newly born babies.
The MPs reported, arbitrary arrests, torture and rape.
It is alleged that the torture and rape were committed before they were sent to the justice ministry's prison.
Harith al Obaidi who heads the cttee (other members Shatha Al Uboussy, Amer Thamer and Kayan Kamil Hassan).
Obaidy reported:
He met 1) two women who said they were raped during interrogation. 2) Women sentenced to death, 3) 2 Iranian (one got cancer) 1 Syrian and several Afghani women 4) one woman has been awaiting trial for he last 3 years. 5) A woman who has gone blind as a result of torture, she said that in the interior ministry prison she was tortured and raped repeatedly in a bid to get her to confess to murder 6) Many women told the committee of being striped naked and raped during interrogation. 7) One woman said she was striped naked and raped in front of her son, who was also a prisoner.
8) the conditions in the prison are bad and many prisoners suffer with their health.
9) one prisoner brought in by the US forces was already pregnant.
Kayan Hassan MP (Kurdish) said that many of the women WERE ACTUALLY RAPED AND WHEN THEY WENT TO THE POLICE TO COMPLAIN, THEY WERE ARRESTED INSTEAD OF THE PERPETRATORS!
KAYAN ALSO SAID THAT MANY OF THE WOMEN PRISONERS ARE PROFESSIONALS AND THE CASES AGAINST THEM ARE FALSE.

العراق: منظمة العفو الدولية تدعو إلى إجراء تحقيق مستقل
في حادثة اغتيال الدكتور حارث العبيدي
في رسالة إلى رئيس الوزراء العراقي نوري كامل المالكي، أعربت منظمة العفو الدولية عن قلقها العميق بشأن مقتل الدكتور حارث العبيدي، نائب رئيس لجنة حقوق الإنسان في البرلمان العراقي، وطلبت توضيحاً عاجلاً للخطوات التي اتخذتها الحكومة للتحقيق في عملية القتل. كما دعت المنظمة إلى إجراء تحقيق مستقل في الأنباء المتعلقة بتعذيب المعتقلين في سجن بمدينة الديوانية.
ففي 12يونيو/حزيران 2009، وبعد انتهاء صلاة الجمعة في مسجد الشواف الواقع بمنطقة اليرموك ببغداد، أُطلقت النار على الدكتور العبيدي، الذي كان يرأس الكتلة السنية في البرلمان، فأردي قتيلاً. وذُكر أن القاتل، بعد إطلاق الرصاص على الدكتور العبيدي من مسدس، ألقى قنبلة يدوية على المصلين، أسفرت عن مقتل خمسة أشخاص وجرح 12شخصاً آخر قبل أن يُردى برصاص الشرطة.
